Exploring Western Sweden

Today we began our drive back toward Gothenburg. To break up the trip, and to do a little more exploring, we decided to stay a night along the Western Sweden archipelago. The archipelago is made up of over 8,000 islands! Yes, 8,000! How we would love to spend an entire summer kayaking, boating, and taking in all that these islands have to offer. However, we were traveling in the winter with an eleven month old baby, so expectations must be adjusted! We had a room for the night in Lysekil, but stopped along the way in Fjallbacka. From the looks of it, it was a major fishing village that might have some things going on in winter, but once we got there, it was a deserted ghost town. There was a restaurant open, though, so we went in for some delicious wood fire pizza. We had good pizza, good wine and beer, and the owner (who was the only guy working) let me change Adeline in the back of the restaurant (why don't these places have even just a little table in the bathroom?). After lunch Will went up the hillside to a beautiful overlook and met a "viking" along the way who recently moved to Fjallbacka and feels like he's always on vacation. I can see why! While Will went up to the overlook Adeline and I went to two "butiken" with no luck. Now it's on to Lysekil!

We drove about forty-five minutes to Lysekil, which was also very sleepy, but at least had more people around. When we checked in to the Grand Lysekil Hotel, no one was working there! There was a note on the door and I called one of the owners who gave me the code for the door. When we got in everything was waiting for us.

We had a very cute, cozy little room. Will brought our things up (Sorry, Will! More stairs!), and then we went and walked around the town a little bit.

Finally we have a star in our window!

View from our room.
We came back to the hotel and got Adeline settled in for the night. One of the draws of this hotel was that one, it is one of the oldest hotels in Western Sweden, and two, there is a restaurant, The Old House Inn, right downstairs! This way we could set up our phones as a baby monitor and be able to have a little "date night!" Also, it happened to be the only place in the area actually open, so that's another win! There was no bartender and no chef, so we were limited to beer, prosecco, nachos, mozz sticks, and fish and chips, but our days visiting the north shore of Minnesota trained us well for this moment. We had a lovely cozy night in Lysekil!
