Swooning over Smögen
This morning we had an easy morning and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast buffet, that was a complete surprise (well, we found out the night before) because I didn't know that they has breakfast available and that it was included with our room rate! Win! It was a mini version of the big European breakfast buffets we have gone to in the past. Complete with a Euro waffle maker! So yummy!
The owner of the hotel had told us that we should go to a nearby overlook, but we couldn't really find it and Adeline was getting so kransky and tired so we said "let's just go!" and hit the road.
I drove us about forty-five minutes to the gloriously sleepy town of Smögen. When you think Western Sweden Fishing Village, this is it. We drove around to get a lay of the land, and just happened to stumble upon the best lunch imaginable at Göstas Fisk and Skaldjur. This was one of those places that had we come in the summertime, we would hardly even get to enjoy the waterfront the restaurant was on, let alone park right outside, walk right in to get a great table, and also have a baby with us. Traveling during the off season definitely has its perks! The restaurant had wonderful ambience, impossibly good food, friendly locals, and a very friendly and patient waitress. I had cured salmon with dill potatoes, and Will had baked witch (fish) with cabbage, mashed potatoes, winter apples, and saffron aioli. We also got local shrimp and langostine. Adeline ate all of it, especially the fancy langostine. Such a bougie baby! Also, I am absolutely obsessed with the decor of this restaurant and hope that someday I can have a home who's kitchen and dining area is a near replica. A girl can dream.
We hopped back in the car to explore around the island a little bit more.
We never wanted to leave Smoögen, but alas, it was time. We set out for the last leg of our Scandinavian road trip, a one and a half hour drive to Gothenburg.
We arrived in Gothenburg in the evening and checked in to our wonderful apartment in the Haga neighborhood. After Will brought up our bags in the elevator, we walked to the ICA grocery store a couple of blocks away and got ingredients for pesto! We came home to give Adeline a proper bathtub bath (we'd been using the kitchen sink since bathtubs are not common in Europe) and put her to bed. We made dinner and then went to bed ourselves.
Today was one of my favorite days. Ever.
