North Shore, Oahu

The North Shore of Oahu has to be my favorite place on earth - ever! So I made sure that we'd get to go there for at least a day while we were here this time. Though we didn't get to spend as much time up north as I would have liked, and we didn't get any snorkeling in either, I still had an incredible time!

Will had a meeting at the Hawaii Agricultural Research Center Thursday morning, so he dropped me off at Starbucks nearby to hang for a bit. After he came to pick me up we drove up to the North Shore. Here, Will has one of his future planting sites. He met a colleague to install a time lapse camera so they can get video of all their field from start to finish - pretty cool!

Next it was time for lunch at Cholo's in Haleiwa town! One of our favorite places!

Now, from the following picture you are going to be able to figure out our news if you haven't already: We're moving to Hawaii! With all of Will's travel and business there, it just makes sense. We are so excited for another adventure in our lives! Our goal is to be out there in the end of June. Stay tuned for more!

Checking the rental guide while sippin' a margarita.

After lunch we got some iced coffee and walked around a bit before we went up the street to try Stand Up Paddleboarding! This was our first time trying the SUP. The surf shop we rented them from had an outlet to a ravine that we paddled up, mostly on our knees since we were going against the current and it was windy. We got up to a more shallow area and turned around to go downstream. Now we got to stand up! But man, this is a lot more challenging than it looks. We give a lot more credit now to the people we see just cruising along on them. We went back down the ravine, past the surf shop, and into a protected bay of the ocean, all while standing up! woo hoo! We got pretty far out into the ocean before we had to kneel again, and then headed back toward the surf shop. On our way back we saw some turtles swimming near us. One popped its head up right next to Will's SUP and I one swam right underneath mine! It was so cool!

Included with our rental was a free shave ice from the shave ice shop next door. This was my first time having it - finally! It's pretty much like a really smooth snow cone that you have to eat in two minutes because it's so hot out it melts almost immediately. We took our shave ice down to the beach and watched a dog fetching a stick and some people getting their outrigger canoes into the water.

We drove along the shoreline for a while after paddleboarding, stopped at the store for a bottle of wine, and went to our favorite place to watch the sunset and watch the huge winter waves of the North Shore beat against the lava rocks. It's so peaceful out there! After the sun went down and I had had enough of getting sprayed by the waves, we went back into Haleiwa town for dinner at Pizza Bob's (Will frequents this place with his colleagues.)

Alas it was time to drive back to Honolulu (about 45 minutes). Though I like the city life, I really do love the small town feel of Haleiwa town and the beauty and tranquility of the North Shore.
