A Day on Kauai

Will had a meeting on Kauai, so we ventured over for the day. It's only about a twenty minute flight, so it's such an easy day trip! (But sounds so crazy to island hop for a day trip.) We started with a great breakfast at a cute little cafe in Lihue before we went to the National Tropical Botanical Garden to find the elusive pongamia tree that was known to be on the island of Kauai, but it was unclear where until Will was able to track it down! We went to explore the McBryde Garden, one of five gardens that are a part of the NTBG. It's loacted along the south shore of the island, in Koloa. Many movies have been filmed here including Pirates of the Caribbean. I totally felt like I was in Jurassic Park while we were here.

Found the pongamia!!

Studying the tree!

Beautiful growth in a rock!

After exploring around the gardens we were hungry! On the way in, we saw a food truck that was in the parking lot. We got a sushi roll at the "Dragon Wagon" to share and took it to a picnic area down the street.

Gorgeous setting for a picnic!

We were still hungry after our appetizer, so we went to the Beach House for lunch. We shared a wrap and had another beautiful view. There were lots of snorkelers at the beach, and two sea turtles in a protected area along the beach!

Will had some work to do so he dropped me off at Poipu Beach. He sent me off in proper fashion: a mini bottle of bubbles in a mini cooler!

All day it was raining on and off and was extremely windy along the shoreline. The sun would be shining brightly and then the clouds would come and it would get really dark, then it would happen all over again.

Luckily Will was able to come get me pretty soon; it was so windy it was hard to even lay on my beach blanket!

Our flight wasn't until 11pm, so we had a good amount of time to explore and get dinner before getting back to the airport. We went in the direction of Waimea Canyon, hoping to get there with some daylight left. Along the way we stopped in Hanapepe Town and stumbled upon the Swinging Bridge. There was also a double rainbow to create a very picturesque scene!

We continued on our way and made it to Waimea Canyon. It's considered to be the Grand Canyon of Hawaii. We got some great views by driving around it, but we're excited to go back and hike through it, too!

We actually found the end of the rainbow! What?!

The sun was going down and we were high up in the mountains on what was sure to be an unlit road, so we ventured into Eleele to have dinner at Kauaii Brewing Company. After a week of fish and tacos (and fish tacos!) it was great to just have a veggie burger!

I can't believe how much we got into one day on Kauai. I'm so excited to go back and explore the Na Pali Coast. Did I mention that I saw nine rainbows in Kauai? Amazing!
