Exploring the North Shore

We thought a great way to welcome Mom to Hawai'i would be to take her to the beach and then go swim in a waterfall. We started the day driving up to the Northwest tip of the island (as far as we could get by doing a little off-roading). If we wanted to go any farther we'd have to hike. This is on our list for another time, but today we had other things planned. Ka'ena point is just a spectacular place. Other than a few fisherman we were the only people up there.

After walking the beach, finding some coral and shells we headed back toward the North Shore area. We made a stop at North Shore Goodies to get some coconut peanut butter for mom. The next stop was Will's planting site. We checked out the neighboring banana orchard and enjoyed some fresh-off-the-tree bananas and showed Mom where the pongamia will be planted.

Next on our agenda was lunch! We stopped at Wailua Bakery for some sandwiches to eat on the beach, then we were off to Waimea Valley to swim in the waterfall.

When we got to Waimea Valley we saw they were having a concert in the grassy area. We got to see a couple groups play Hawaiian music. Then we explored around Waimea Valley. It was nice to have a little extra time because in the past Will and I have pretty much gone straight through to get to the waterfall without being able to look through the gardens. We had a nice leisurely walk on our way to the waterfall. Today the waterfall wasn't running as heavily as other times we have been there, but it was nice actually because I was able to get closer to the waterfall and sit underneath it. When the waterfall is running heavier it is challenging to swim close to the water due to the strength of the falls.

Here is an interesting plant. I thought its blossoms looked like pumpkins!

After visiting Waimea Valley we drove up toward Pupukea and walked along the beach where the Pipeline surfing competition takes place. Our plan was to get pizza from a food truck along the beach and eat it on the beach, how Will and I have done before, but the wait for pizza was an hour and it was starting to rain. So we decided to head back to town, order pizza from our local pizza place, and eat at home. We had such an adventures day it was nice to just unwind at home.

Here's a pic of the pizza truck on the North Shore:
