A Day Trip to Germany
About two and a half hours East of Seattle is a little town called Leavenworth. This small town was once the headquarters of the Great Northwest Railroad in the early 1900s. In the 1920s the railroad relocated to Wenatchee and left the small town in an economic struggle. In the 1960s a program was developed to revitalize the town. They decided to model the town on a Bavarian Village, which works perfectly given that Leavenworth is tucked in the middle of snowy mountains. Feeling nostalgic for our visits to Germany, we took an afternoon trip to Leavenworth.
We slept in and enjoyed the cozy cabin and beautiful scenery before getting ready to go. It was a rainy morning but on our drive the rain turned into faint snow, and on the other side of the mountains it was a beautiful day!
With no agenda, we simply meandered the town, stopping for drinks, snacks, and window shopping along the way.
We walked all along the street in the pictures above, knowing that at the end there was a must visit, highly recommended establishment - Icicle Brewing Company. We shared a flight and nibbled on pretzels with mustard and Beecher's cheese. Will got a spicy sausage, too!
We strolled around, sipped some gluhwein at a local wine tasting room (which left me a little disappointed as it wasn't as good as in Germany and we couldn't walk around outside with it like at the Christmas festivals!).
It was warming up and the sun was peaking out so we relaxed on the patio at the Sausage Garten. They make the sausages on site and even make a veggie one, too! (This is one strong advantage of "Germany" being in the Pacific Northwest!) The sun felt so good! Oh, and did I mention the mustard bar with a big tub of piping hot sauerkraut? Will was in heaven!
We were so lucky that we were able to come visit on a Friday. Most of the places were open earlier in the day, but nothing was very crowded. This little town gets packed on the weekends with regional visitors. But by this time it was 4pm, and a couple places were opening. One of them was the Blewett Brewing Company. We decided to go check it out in honor of Trump who "blew it" today by dropping the healthcare bill. We'll cheers to that!
Isn't this just a beautiful little town?!
We wanted to leave Leavenworth to be home in Index before dark. It's about an hour and fifteen minutes away and on some twisty, narrow roads that were sure to get slippery given the rain and snowy mix. So, this left us with time for one last stop. We saved what seemed to be the most authentic German restaurant for last, Andreas Keller Restaurant. What's best is that they even had kaese spaetzle and weinkraut soup!
With full tummies we got in the car and headed home. We had such a wonderful day making memories in this German town!
