Christmas in Australia

Fortunately Australians don't take their holidays quite as serious as they do in Germany (many businesses were closed for five straight days there!). However, we knew Christmas would be difficult for finding things to do, so we planned it as a travel day. Our hotel offered a buffet breakfast everyday, though it was a little pricey for an everyday breakfast, we thought it would be perfect for Christmas, alleviating the need to find someplace else open, while still getting a nice meal. Plus, the restaurant is right along the river so it was very picturesque.

Once our tummies were full it was time to head to the airport. We were on our way to Sydney today! The official beginning of our vacation!

When we got to the airport we thought it would be nice to get a mimosa or something like that to start the day. But we were met with this sign:

What a silly law! And I think it's so funny that they have to define "meal" and that within the definition is that the person is at a table with cutlery. We asked a lady working there if the regulation had been in place for a long time and she said it had, for both Christmas and Good Friday. Apparently there's history with people getting a little too out of hand drinking and this was a way to try to limit the debauchery. But really, Good Friday? Who's heard of that? Silly Australia, they really do, do things upside down, haha.

Anyway, we landed in Sydney only to hop in a car and head right out to the mountains. The Blue Mountains were spectacular. There is a haze of blue that lingers in the treetops which happens from the particles of dust and moisture from the eucalyptus trees catching the sunlight. It's so beautiful!

Our hotel was in the small town of Katoomba. Just down the street is one of the most popular lookout points, The Three Sisters. It is a rock formation and Aboriginal legend says that it was there that three sisters were turned to stone.

It was pretty chilly in Brisbane (Brizzy!) so when we got out of the car in the Blue Mountains I was surprised that it was so HOT! Like, it's summer in the Midwest, HOT! We quickly looked around but then I just had to get to the hotel and change.

We settled in to the Hotel Blue and headed down to the bar and lounge for some drinks, dinner, and jazz music. (It was also strange to adjust to it still being light out at 8pm when in Hawai`i it was pitch black by 6:30!)

We quickly came to learn that Aussies love their pizza. That's what was on the menu for tonight, which was just fine for us. We were so happy to have a nice play to stay that provided drinks, dinner, and music for us on Christmas!
