A Day in the Mountains

The original plan was for the boys to take a day to go skiing and snowboarding in the Alps, but due to the unseasonable weather, there was very little snow! This was sad for the boys, but good in the end because all of us were able to spend the day together. Since there wasn't much snow, it was possible to go up into the mountains via a gondola ride and hike down what is normally the ski slope.

Before the day got started the boys drove to find us some breakfast. They got some pastries and sandwiches here.

After a delish breakfast, we too a short drive to Berktesgaden to visit the Konigssee Valley and the Berktesgaden National Park. We find this area of the Bavarian Alps to be very similar to the Lake Tahoe area of California.

When we arrived we took the Jennerbahn Cable Car up to Mount Jenner, which is the highest point for visitors in the Berktesgaden National Park.

Once we got to the top we explored around, taking in the views, and then settled in for a refreshing beverage and snack. The weather was just spectacular!

Lake Konigssee surrounded by mountains

We could have stayed up there all day, but the day was going to slip away from us so we had get going down the trail. We hiked a few miles down to the middle station of the gondola.

It did get a little icy sometimes, and one time I did scooch down on my bottom!

Along the "ski" trail there are bier gardens for your enjoyment, so we stopped for a refreshment!

We arrived at the middle station just in time for the last ride down. Phew!

The Alpine homes are just too cute!

Other than a pretzel we hadn't had much for lunch so we were starving once we got to the bottom of the mountain. We walked into the valley near the lake and enjoyed dinner along the water.

The restaurant, all lit up for the holidays.
