A Day in Sausalito
Today was our last full day together, so we wanted to end it Jim and Hawley's visit on a great note!
We started our day with one of the best brunches I've had since moving here. As per a recommendation I found on one of my favorite websites, we set up reservations for four at Osteria Divino. Osteria did not disappoint! How can you go wrong with locally roasted coffee, fresh, local, grilled focaccia bread, and a free mimosa with a brunch entree?! We also enjoyed dishes such as omelettes, six grain waffle with raw coconut sugar, apples, and ricotta, and a mushroom panini! Delicious!
After brunch we walked along the waterfront and walked through the Sunday Farmers' Market. We walked near some of the iconic floating homes and house boats, and even dipped our feet in the water. Our plan was to then hop in the car to go for a drive through the Marin Headlands and along the Pacific Coast, but we got sidetracked by open house signs for a few of the floating homes! We decided that this opportunity may not come up again, especially for Jim and Hawley, so we decided to stop and tour the homes. They basically just felt like little two story apartments or condos except you were on the water! It was fun to see what life might be like in that type of setting, but we ultimately decided it isn't for us.
After seeing the homes, we got back on track and headed for the Marin Headlands. As "one of the most unique areas in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Marin Headlands covers various types of histories from the Miwok Indians to the Military, including historic Fort Barry and Fort Cronkhite, the NIKE Missile site and the 150 year-old Point Bonita lighthouse." (info taken from nps.gov)
Upon arriving we stopped at the visitor center to plan where we might go within the park area. Now, I'd like to give you a little background information. Will's 30th birthday is coming up in June, and I had been asking Will what he would like to do to celebrate, especially because as it happens, I have his birthday off from work! About a month ago Will said he would like to go camping. The type of camping where you hike in a ways and pitch your tent and live off the land a bit, rather than pulling your car right up to the tent site, and end up being only feet away from the next tent over - too close for comfort if you ask me! So I began searching and searching for any camp site within a couple hour radius from here which would allow us to camp in this style. Being new to California, there are still some things that I am learning, for example, that people here are nuts about camping and that all sites (for weekends, anyway) fill up six months in advance when the reservations are released online! What?! So, being that I only began looking in March, I didn't think there was any way we would get to go camping for Will's birthday. Until today when we stopped in at the visitor's center and talked with the park ranger. Turns out they had one opening on the Sunday, June 9th for the best campsite in the park which overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge! And better yet, the site is free!! We won't be able to have a campfire, but there is a grilling area for cooking, and we'll have an AMAZING view of the city! It couldn't have worked out any better! Here are some pictures of where we will be camping!
We continued exploring the area and came across a nice beach at Rodeo Cove. We stopped and walked around. It felt so nice to have soft sand at my feet! I got really excited about the beautiful landscape and the warm weather and went running for the water. Well, turns out I can't break as quickly as I thought so the combination of my running into the ocean, and the waves coming in strong resulted in me getting much higher than knee deep in water, and walking away with a pretty wet skirt! Luckily, it was a warm day and I had some towels in the car (a habit that I can attribute to my father!) and I was dry by dinner time!
Speaking of, we left the Marin Headlands with a hunger for Mexican food. We drove back in to Oakland and enjoyed huge plates of Mexican food at Los Cantaros, a restaurant near Lake Merrit that Will and I have been eyeing up for quite some time.
To wrap up our evening and our time together, we invited our friend Katie over for a rousing game of Clue. Oh what fun we had!
