Our First Visitors in Cali!

This weekend we hosted our first visitors, Matt and Nyla, who visited from Washington state. We had a busy, fun filled weekend exploring Oakland and San Francisco. Here's a little taste of our adventures!

Friday, September 21st

Matt and Nyla arrived in Oakland around 10am. I had been at the Farmers' Market with a friend, so Will took them out for breakfast and I met them back at home a little later.  We hopped in the car to drive up into the Berkeley Hills to do some exploring.

Wetland research area behind the Science Hall at UC Berkeley.

Beautiful mountains!

We headed back down to Oakland to Jack London Square.  Will had to pick up some things from his office, so it was a good chance to show Matt and Nyla his office and the area.  We stopped in at one of our fave places, Beer Revolution, and then walked through the Square where a food truck festival was being held for the weekend.

At Beer Revolution

Food truck festival. This place was making delicious looking paella!

We were pretty tired after a long day (Matt and Nyla had been up since 3am to catch their early flight!) and we had a big day planned for the next day, so we relaxed at home with a BBQ out back and a little Jenga to top it off!

Our big day in the city!

We had been looking forward to this day for a long time. We went sailing on the San Francisco Bay!! It was so amazing and I can't wait to go again. Only next time I will be sure to bring my mittens. It was so cold I thought my fingers were going to fall off. Seriously, they turned white.

It's the 22nd anniversary of the sea lions at Pier 39!

The catamaran sail boat we took out on The Bay!

We got to sail under the Golden Gate! What an amazing perspective!

Lounging next to the Golden Gate.
More lounging.

After our sailboat ride we walked around Pier 39 and had a light lunch. Then we continued walking up the Embarcadero to check out the USS Pampanito, which is docked at Pier 45.  It was used during WWII.

Going down!

A little Chicago representation!
Minneapolis, too!
Teeny bathroom and laundry room!
Hanging out in the rec room.

Across the way from the submarine is a warehouse like hall filled with antique games.  It reminded me a lot of the games found at House on the Rock in Wisconsin and I recognized several that are there!

Career Pilot - Will is going to be a dictator. And yes, nudist is an option!

We left what is the craziness of the waterfront and headed inland.  We walked up to Telegraph Hill and visited Coit Tower. The fog was starting to roll in for the evening and we got some spectacular views.

A view from the back of the Coit Tower property. This is looking out toward the Bay Bridge and Oakland.
The way this ship was situated on The Bay makes it appear as though it is resting on the Bay Bridge!

For dinner we wandered in to Little Italy for a delicious, authentic Italian dinner at a tiny family owned restaurant, Franchino.  We were exhausted by this point so it was back home to Oakland.

Sunday, September 23rd

After such an adventurous day on Saturday, we had a low-key Sunday.  We spent the morning drinking coffee, reading books and the newspaper.  We had lunch at Cactus Taqueria in our neighborhood and then went to hit some balls at a driving range near our place.  When we got back home Matt and Nyla went swimming while Will got ready for his trip to Florida this week.  He is over-seeing the planting of a few hundred trees at his company's site outside of Orlando.
