Turtle! OMG, turtle! OMG, turtle!
This is what I found myself saying over and over again while up on the North Shore!
I can't believe I forgot to post about this, but in late July Will had a couple of meetings on the North Shore where his planting site is. I hadn't started work yet so I decided to tag along. While Will was at his meetings I found plenty of ways to occupy my time; I did a little window shopping, got a great picnic lunch from Waialua Bakery consisting of a veggie patty sandwich and a vegan peanut butter cookie, and walked down to the beach to enjoy said picnic lunch and relax. After hanging out at the beach for a while and studying my surroundings, I thought about how we had never left the immediate area of Haleiwa Beach Park the times when we had visited. I took a peek on my phone to see what might be up around the point that goes out along the bay and saw it was Pua'ena Point Beach Park. Seeing as though it was a legit place, I began walking. As I walked I passed a few beach goers and a couple of fisherman. Every turn I took there were fewer and fewer people, and I felt like I was getting exponentially farther away from civilization. As I walked I entered the Police Beach area where episodes of Lost were filmed. The beach was so spectacular, covered in lava rock, and the vegetation was quite literally right out of a movie (or in this case, TV show!). You can google these places for more pics!
While I was walking I saw at first what I thought was a huge rock, wrong! It was a sea turtle! I got really excited, took some pictures, and then turned to continue on.
I wasn't one step farther when I couldn't believe my eyes, the beach was covered in sea turtles! The water right along the shore was filled with sea turtles! I tried counting but lost track after twenty something! Everywhere I looked there were turtles coming in or out, floating in the crashing waves, and heads and fins popping up every which way. It was absolutely spectacular. I only wish that someone else would have been with me to witness this!
