Hiking Hawai'i

There are many activities Will and I have been able to do during our visits in Hawai'i, hiking has not been one of them since it requires a good part of the day and gear that we didn't usually haul along with us. Now that we live here we are excited to get out on the many beautiful hiking trails that Hawai'i has to offer.

To start things off, we chose a hiking trail only about ten minutes from our cottage on Mt. Tantalus, in the Makiki area of Honolulu. The trail was a couple of miles and took us about an hour and a half, including a stop for a picnic. We saw a taro field, small waterfall, stream, beautiful eucalyptus trees, and some peek-a-boo city views.

At the very beginning of the trail, it was part of the arboretum, so the landscaping was pristine and featured a few plants native to Hawai'i. Here is the taro field. We love taro! Especially taro pancakes : ) If you come visit us I will make them for you!

Crazy tree. I thought this would be a squirrel's dream jungle gym.

We were well over half way through the trail when we came upon this sign. It said we weren't supposed to continue on the path due to falling rock. Well, we weren't about to turn around at this point, and there were many people who passed us during the hike (because I was walking slowly) and didn't come back in our direction, so clearly other people kept going. We took our chances and made it out OK!

Then we came upon this broken bridge, with no warning sign. I think they have their priorities wrong here. So again, we took our chances and made it out OK!

And here is another beautiful part of the forest. Here it felt more like Northern California than Hawaii with all the eucalyptus trees. The first part of the trail had been much more rainforest like; on this end it was very dry.

On this section of the trail we stopped for a picnic lunch and then made it back to the trail head. We had a great first hike and I didn't even get that muddy! wahoo!
