Hawaii Bound

With Will's new role as Project Manager of Terviva's Hawaii project, he has been traveling there quite often. Poor guy, right?! Traveling to Hawaii for work?! Rough life . . . : ) Anyway, he's been there twice before, and had to go again for two weeks. What this meant was that I was finally going to be able to join him on his work trip. And it just so happened that I had the week off since Girls Inc. was closed between Summer and Fall sessions. We started the day with a flight from Oakland to Honolulu on the island of Oahu. We then took a connecting flight to Hilo on the Big Island. At the Honolulu airport we made a stop for lunch at the Kona Brewery Restaurant inside the airport. We even got to look over a beautiful outdoor garden area.

When we arrived in Hilo we picked up the rental car and headed to our hotel, Uncle Billy's Hilo Hotel, which is really nothing to write home about. I walked along Hilo Bay while Will met with a person who takes care of their planting site in Hilo.

Will got back around 5:15pm and then we stopped at the restaurant next to our hotel for pupus (yes, poo-poos, aka appetizers). Next we had to stop at Walgreens to get some Claritin for all the mosquito bites I had gotten in the mere five hours after landing in Hawaii! (Hilo, on the East side of the Big Island, is very wet and full of rainforest so there are quite a few bugs around. Luckily the other areas we were in were more desert like so it was dry and less buggy.) On our way to dinner Will drove us past the site where they have planted pongomia and then to Rainbow Falls, one of the waterfalls in the area.

We enjoyed some of the best Thai food we've had since we left Minneapolis at Full Moon Cafe in Hilo. The Pad Thai really hit the spot!

You probably remember hearing about the Perseid Meteor Shower that has passed through Earth's atmosphere the last few days. Well, it just so happened that Mauna Kea, a volcano on the Big Island, provides one of the best sites in the world for astronomical research, and has a visitor information center and telescopes at 9,000 feet. We packed up blankets from our hotel and headed up. The center stayed open until 3 am for the event! They had telescopes set up and we got to see Saturn! SATURN!! It was so amazing; it actually looked fake but it was one of the most amazing things I've seen! The girl who was helping us with the telescope was from Vallejo here in the East Bay. Californians are everywhere in Hawaii! After looking through the telescopes we set up our blankets on the hood of our rental car, cuddled up, and watched the Perseid meteor shower. We saw at least six meteors fly across the night's sky all with an amazing starlit night sky and full Milky Way Galaxy for the backdrop. This was certainly a night we will never forget. It was simply stunning!

**I have so much to share with you all from our trip in Hawaii. I was there with Will for nine days! I'll try to get up a little more each day, so keep checking back and please bare with me as I sort through all of our pictures and write narrations!**
