We were only in Kona for about 24 hours; just a quick stop over to fly out of Kona to get to Honolulu. Acai bowls are a big thing in Hawaii. Each one of them had it's own take on the ingredients and assembly, but they are essentially like a Jamba Juice fruit smoothie in a bowl with granola, fruit, honey, and things like chia seeds and goji berries. Will had seen signs around restaurants for them on his previous trips but had never tried one, so we stopped at a dedicated acai bowl restaurant that was just down the street from our hotel. We got the bowls to go and took them back to our hotel. Our hotel had a private "lagoon" and beach adjacent to it, so we took our bowls there and ate at the beach! We did a little swimming and snorkeling as well. It was already pretty hot at only about 10am!

After a morning at the beach we went back to our room to get ready for the day and pack everything up since we would be going to Honolulu later that night.
It was time for lunch so we went back to Huggo's on the Rocks for lunch. (We saw some people eating fish tacos that looked delicious the night before, so we wanted some for ourselves!)
Will needed to spend some time working, so he hunkered down at a coffee shop with wi-fi while I walked along the main drag in Kona to do some window shopping. After a few hours I met Will back at the coffee shop for the best coffee drink ever! Iced Kona coffee blended with locally made Kona coffee ice cream! Yum!
For dinner we ate at The Fish Hopper. It was supposedly rated the 2012 best seafood restaurant of West Hawaii, but personally I thought Huggo's was better. Oh well, it was still a good dinner.

View from our table. To the far right along the ocean you can see a white building that curves, that's our hotel! It was built to look like a cruise ship! |
Then it was time to go to the airport. Our flight from Kona to Honolulu took a whopping 25 minutes. Sheesh! : )
When we got into town we got our rental car and Will drove us to check on and show me the huge pongomia tree that is growing at the University of Hawaii. It was huge! It was totally dark so I didn't get to take a picture of it, but it was exciting to see. On Will's last trip to Hawaii he had done some trimming at the base of the tree to try to get it to grow some basal sprouts (essentially a shoot off the base of the tree). When we got there that night we were pleasantly surprised to see many basal sprouts that were about 18 inches tall. The good news about this is that Will can take the cuttings and send them off to their nursery in Texas to grow more awesome trees like the one in Hawaii!
Next we checked in to our luxurious hotel and walked to Waikiki Beach.
