Ka`ena Point via the North Shore

About a year ago Will and I hiked out to Ka`ena Point from the West side of the island. Ever since then it's been on our to-do list to ride our bikes out to this beautiful Northwest tip of the island via the North Shore. (There is an access road on both the West and North sides until you get to the very tip of the island where turns into a bird sanctuary. The Wai`anae Mountain Range runs in the middle, so one must choose to get to Ka`ena point via one side or the other.) So finally we woke up Saturday morning, threw the bikes in the back of the truck, and made our way up north. We had a little picnic overlooking the ocean before we rode up to the point.

The trail is about three miles long, and bordered on one side by the Wai`anae Mountains and the ocean on the other. The road has been pretty torn up over the years from non-permitted people driving on it, but it made for fun trail riding conditions!

On our ride up we were treated to sights of Humpback Whales splashing with their flippers, spouting, and swimming at the surface.

Once we got to Ka`ena Point we were treated to even more whale sightings! We saw what we were pretty sure was a mom and her baby swimming along the Western side, around the point, and out into the ocean. We also saw many Laysan Albatross flying right above our heads and protecting their nests. There was a monk seal lounging in the tidepool. There was so much natural beauty it was almost too much to handle, almost!

Looking at the Waianae mountain range. On the right is the West side of the island, on the left is the North side.

The very tip!

Overlooking the bird sanctuary and walking trail, toward the North side.

Doing our part picking up opala (trash) on the trail.

As we started our journey back we came across a parks services worker and he told us we could leave our bag of opala along the trail and a person would come through later to pick it up! This was awesome because then Will didn't have to bike with a bag of trash!

We made our way back down the trail while enjoying more whale sightings, and at the parking lot at the end there were even a couple that breached the water!

Will found some salt in the rocks.

And he ate it! He said it was very strong.

Every hike/bike ride must end with Pau Hana! So we were off to Haleiwa to enjoy a beer and poke at Banzai Sushi. yum yum! What a wonderful adventure day we had!
