North Shore Kauai
When we got to the North Shore last night it was dark so we were excited to wake up and see where we were! We slept in a bit and then enjoyed breakfast on the lanai.
We were loving the condo but we couldn't wait to get out and explore the little towns of North Shore Kauai.
We stopped at the Hanalei Valley Overlook to see the taro fields.
Farther along Kuhio Highway we came upon another lookout of Hanalei Bay!
On our way to Hanalei town we passed over one of many one lane bridges. It's a good thing we were coming up today and not two nights ago; the bridge had been closed due to flooding from the storms!
In Hanalei we visited a few shops and galleries, but then we were hungry! We had lunch at the famous Tahiti Nui, where George Clooney was to film part of The Descendants movie. We had pizza and drinks!
We spent most of the afternoon walking the rest of Hanalei and the beach of Hanalei Bay. It was just spectacular! Since we were going in and out of the water we didn't take cameras, but I really wish we had some pictures of the natural beauty that was there. (Hint for gift givers: We could really use a waterproof camera right about know! haha!)
We had a little bit of time before our evening plans, so we took a quick stop to another North Shore landmark - Queen's Bath. The rocks have formed a large tide pool below another rock formation, making it a popular jumping and swimming spot. Unfortunately the tide had been coming in for several hours and the waves were really crashing up so it wasn't the best for swimming. Many people have been swept away here and there's even a rock with tallies to show it. I really didn't want Will to jump in, but he and Mom said "look at all the kids doing it!" and so I was quite distraught the entire time! But I played along and watched and took pictures while I held on to the belongings!
I could finally relax when it was over! We went to another area of the shoreline and watched turtles swimming. We hoped to see whales, but had no luck.
For the evening we planned to attend the Kilauea Art Night. Kilauea is a very small little town but had a cute little festival with music, arts and crafts vendors, and snacks. We walked around, looked at the items for sale, ate Ono Pops, and talked story with some of the people there.
A landmark in Kilauea is the Kilauea Lighthouse and the National Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately the path out to the lighthouse is under construction so we weren't able to go out, but we could still enjoy the beautiful view.
After a long day we went back to Foodland for a couple more things (like more chocolate covered fruit!) and then ate dinner at a pizza place a short walk from our condo for soup and salad. yum!

There was a pretty waterfall and stream along the short hike down to the water. |
