Together Again
You've probably noticed a significant gap in events on the blog lately. Well, it's mostly due to Will's crazy busy traveling schedule lately! After my return from Hawaii, Will stayed until the following Friday. He was home for a few days before he left to go on a camping trip with some friends. Then, he was back for a day before he left for Hawaii again. He returned home safely this morning and we were excited to be able to spend a day together that didn't involve him getting ready to go on the road again.
After I picked up Will from the airport Saturday morning, we came home and got ready for the day. We headed in to San Francisco to watch the America's Cup races, get a pumpkin spice late, have lunch, and do a little shoe shopping for me! Our first stop was of course Starbucks, then we walked to the America's Cup Pavilion to watch the first race, at 1:15, on the big screen. Thanks in big part to New Zealand's boat nearly capsizing, the U.S. team won its first race after a six race losing streak. It was so much fun to watch the race right next to the water, and see the boats come in at the finish line.
The race got done around 1:45 and the next race was starting at 2:15. We wanted to watch the second race from America's Cup Village, which is in the Marina Green area, and about a 45 minute walk from where we were. Obviously that timing doesn't add up, so we hopped in a cab and quickly arrived in the Marina. We got great seats right on the water's edge and were enjoying the beautiful scenery and the second race, when suddenly the boats slowed way down (they go about 50 miles per hour!) and the race seemed to stop. Well, in fact, it did stop. The wind had picked up so much that it was too strong to race. The second race was canceled and that was it! We were really happy that we were able to see the full first race since this one couldn't be held.
Our next stop was lunch, just a few blocks away. We had a groupon for a burger joint called Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers. Unfortunately we didn't read the fine print that it couldn't be used on a Saturday, but we enjoyed our meal nonetheless. We had a lovely long lunch, sipping California beer, chit chatting, and watching the hustle and bustle of the city.
Next we took a bus down to Lower Nob Hill/Union Square. There we stopped at Cantina for my fave drink - pisco! After a little pick-me-up, Will was so good to go shoe shopping with me. I found a great pair on clearance!
We walked around the Union Square area and stopped at Hops and Hominy. There we had a drink and some of the best Mac and Cheese I've had since leaving the midwest! They even served it with complimentary fresh out of the oven honey cornbread. We also got to watch the Badger football game there! After we ate we were ready to get going back to the East Bay. We really wanted to watch the rest of the Badger game, and realized it had been too long since we had been to our local Irish dive bar, so we had a night cap at McNally's. We got to watch the rest of the Badgers game (what an ending, huh?) and we got free t-shirts from the Jack Daniels promo girls!
It's great to have Will back in town and be together again.
